What ropes to use in bondage?

Bondage ropes are the essential ingredient to know and master bondage and BDSM practices. In soft bondage, BDSM ropes give pleasure from being tied up by the partner for the sensation of constriction or light compression. For some, this is the highest arousal factor than stimulation with sex toys.

In bondage, ropes are made of different materials depending on the type of practice you plan to perform: you can choose between cotton, jute, hemp, or linen and also between different thicknesses. If you choose to incorporate ropes into sex, consider the tactile factor: a soft, flexible texture leads to a very different result compared to a rough, tough rope.

Ropes in BDSM can be made of natural or synthetic fibers, although by custom, the former is the favorite in bondage. By trying different ropes, you can appreciate the differences and discover which rope excites you the most. The right ropes will allow you to practice the different bonds and knots of BDSM, alone or in pairs. Whether you are a novice or someone with experience, whether you want to practice soft bondage bindings or shibari suspensions, you will find here the different types of ropes to enjoy your bondage experience.

WHAT MATERIALS TO USE?

HEMP ROPES

Hemp is the cheapest natural material, but it is not very popular among Japanese bondage experts. Hemp ropes are heavy and difficult to handle in some exercises. They are also rough and unsightly against the skin unless you treat them.

COTTON ROPES

The softest and easiest ropes for beginners to handle are cotton ropes: delicate on the skin, they are not recommended for “high tension” bindings, such as hangers.

LINEN ROPES

Linen ropes are rarely used, although some people like them for their softness to the touch. They are slippery for the most part, with negative consequences for binding quality.

JUTE ROPES

Jute is the material originally used in Japan and has certain advantages such as greater strength and lower cost.

SYNTHETIC FIBERS

Synthetic fibers are mainly made of plastic and have become a popular choice in the West because of their softness and ease of washing, as well as their strength.

NYLON

The most common rope for bondage is 8mm nylon, which is strong, soft and washes well. Although it is not recommended for hanging.

BRAIDED COTTON

One of the most popular options: 8-10 mm braided cotton. It is a material with good plasticity so that the knots do not slip, as well as its smooth finish that prevents burning. It is not very strong, so it is not suitable for hanging.

Characteristics of the ropes

There are characteristics of ropes that must be taken into account in activities where there is a weight that must be supported by them, for example, in the case of suspensions. Ropes are affected both by use and by external conditions, which can range from changes in hardness to resistance to weight. These strength or capacity characteristics are given by the rope manufacturer.

The diameter

Regarding the diameter, the ropes should be between 6 and 8 mm, in the case of a smaller diameter will increase the pressure at the same point and could harm the person.

Depending on the sensitivity of the person, strings larger than 7 mm may seem a bit rough, but this will depend on what you want to express through the strings.

On the one hand, thinner ropes can be used to tie more delicate areas, such as genitals or the head, while larger diameter ropes can be used to tie the rest of the body.

It is always important to know how long your rope will last, its ability to withstand weight and friction. It is recommended to change the ropes regularly.
